AboutBerlin Film Society

We are an independent, non-profit organisation which prides itself on showcasing independent and auteur cinema, as well as championing innovative filmmaking talent.

A PLATFORM FOR NEW CINEMAPreview Screenings

Berlin Film Society has built a reputation for programming the best in independent cinema and providing a platform for films which may be overlooked by German distributors. We select films directly from festivals such as Sundance, Toronto and the Berlinale. Film preview highlights include Tangerine, Force Majeure, The Act of Killing, 20,000 Days on Earth, Sightseers, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, and The House I Live In.

CHAMPIONING NEW TALENTDIRECTOR Q&As

We have hosted some of the most exciting and innovative directors out there, and are proud to champion independent filmmaking talent by organising director Q&As after our film screenings. Previous directors include Joshua Oppenheimer, Roger Ross Williams, Sean Baker, Roland Klick and Lisa Immordino Vreeland.

FORGOTTEN MASTERPIECESCLASSIC & AUTEUR CINEMA

Our programme includes forgotten masterpieces, New Wave classics, and auteur favourites. There are so many films that deserve to be seen on the big screen again and one of our key aims is to give new life and find new audiences for the trail-blazing films of yesterday.

UNIQUE PLACES AND SPACESEXPERIENTIAL CINEMA

From the unique and obscure to the well-known and much loved, we’ve become known for finding impressive venues and thematically-relevant sponsors to compliment our films, from a neo-Gothic church and an abandoned 19th century ice factory to Mexican Mezcal and Irish whiskey brands.

No form of art goes beyond ordinary consciousness as film does, straight to our emotions, deep into the twilight room of the soul.
