Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures
Directed by Fenton Bailey & Randy Barbato
USA, 2016, 108mins, OV/OF
“Look at the pictures, look at the pictures!”. With these words Senator Jesse Helms denounced the work of Robert Mapplethorpe in Congress. Twenty-five years on, the first full length documentary about the artist since his death does just that. An unrestricted examination of the life and work of Mapplethorpe, whose photographs pushed social boundaries with their frank depictions of nudity, sexuality and fetishism.
